How Solar Systems work

Rinnai Solar systems are actually very simple in operation. Solar Collectors mounted on the roof absorb the energy from the sun and heat cooler water that flows through pipes just beneath the surface.

This hot water is then transfered to a storage cylinder ready for use. As you use the hot water, cold water is pushed back into the cylinder and then through the Collector for heating.

To ensure that there is always hot water for those days that are cloudy or raining, the addition of either an electric or gas booster completes the system.

As part of the country’s Clean Energy Future Package the CEFC’s primary task is to provide a financing source for renewable energy investments, energy efficiency upgrades and low polluting technologies. The CEFC will also be supporting industries that directly affect clean energy technologies for its development and further research.

Investors will also be encouraged about how the CEFC will work; the new sources of finance will open doors of opportunity across industries to reduce their environmental impacts and to save money through various energy efficient means. Chief executive of the Clean Energy Council, Matthew Warren, said the proposed CEFC was a necessary and logical institution.

 According to the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) the combination of the carbon price and the CEFC will be the most economically viable way of propelling and commercialising renewable energy technologies in the country; specifically solar PV, solar thermal, geothermal and wave power. The support mechanism of the CEFC through loans and loan guarantees will create more sustainable green jobs in the country and help fund the necessary transition to a low carbon economy in Australia.

By March 2012 the body is expected to release a concrete plan on how specifically it will work and its primary responsibilities throughout the transition, especially once the carbon tax is implemented in July 2012.

Solar Panels installed onto Metricon Stadium

The new AFL Metricom Stadium on the Gold Coast is the first project of its kind to integrate solar PV technology into a sports complex, which will greatly reduce its running costs in energy consumption as well as the stadium’s carbon emissions. A $4.4 million dollar solar roof has been built on the inner edge of the stadium, with enough solar panels to power 20% of its energy needs. The project was completed in May 2011.

The Queensland government said that the Metricon Project is about more than just reducing carbon and energy consumption; it will also demonstrate how well the technology can be incorporated into such structures. Being an iconic place the stadium will be a great reminder to the public about energy efficiency and its benefits.

Train Stations

Currently the Indooroopilly, Varsity and Richland stations in Brisbane have installed solar panels to improve the railways energy efficiency and reduce their operation’s effects on the environment. Indooroopilly hosts a 5 KW solar power system, the Varsity station has its 2.2 KW system and the Richland station has installed a 10 KW solar PV system. All three stations were also modified to improve energy consumption through passive means like improving ventilation to reduce the need for auxiliary sources.

University of Queensland

The University of Queensland has installed the largest flat panel solar PV system in the country. The system is comprised of 5,000 polycrystalline silicon solar panels, and an 8.4 kilowatt concentrating solar photovoltaic array;  together capable of generating 1750 megawatt hours of electricity annually and reducing the University’s carbon emissions by 1770 tons each year.

The system will also enable researchers to compare how the two technologies perform, and the analysis from the research will be used in future solar project, with the findings being especially important on a large scale basis.

Solar Schools

The Queensland Government aims to install a solar panel system in every state school, and a generous $60 million budget was allotted for the project under the Solar and Energy Efficiency in Schools Program. A minimum of 2 KW solar PV systems will be installed in every school and other energy efficient measures will also be observed.

The program is an initiative of the government to create a virtual power station across all aspects of the community.

Large Scale Solar Projects

Under the leadership of the Office of Clean Energy it has been identified that Queensland is a rich source of solar radiation, with numerous potential locations for massive solar farms comparable to the best locations in the world. With this in mind the government is looking at building a solar precinct, where solar farms are created closely to each other and connected to a high level transmission and grid network.

Currently there are community based solar farms being built in Kogan Creek and Hervey Bay. Both projects will increase the state’s solar capacity significantly and improve energy generation locally.

The state has also funded over $70 million into round one of the $1.5 billion Solar Flagships Program. The 250 MW Solar Dawn project will be largest of its kind, utilising integrated concentrated solar power technology, and will be built 20 km southeast of Chinchilla in South West Queensland.

Energy Minister Stephen Robertson together with the Mayor of Hervey Bay lead the ceremony on Sept 28th to officially begin construction on the first community owned solar farm, not only in the region, but in all of Queensland. The project will cover a total land space of 2,600 square meters and will use 1,584 solar panels to generate over 600 megawatts of electricity to power almost 100 homes in the community.

The solar farm is expected to reduce the region’s carbon emission by 600 tons annually. The solar farm is also milestone in Queensland since it is both the first stand-alone farm, and the first to integrate with both the industrial and commercial sectors of the state.

The second part of the initiative is installing an extensive solar PV array at the Hervey Bay Hospital. As part of its commitment to both health and clean energy, the Qld government has funded a $1.3 million 266 kilowatt solar panel system for the hospital to help offset its carbon emissions and greatly reduce its energy consumption.

In projected figures, the system can save the hospital around $20,000 on energy bills and 400 tons of carbon annually.
