The Brisbane City Council is living up to its credentials as one of the greenest cities in Australia with the announcement of a 15 year renewable energy contract which will help reduce Brisbane’s carbon footprint to half of its 2000 emission levels by 2012. The council has already received bids from 20 firms and said the final decision will be made sometime in June. It is expected that whichever private sector firm is successful will use their assured market supply as a catalyst to build a renewable energy plant in southeast Queensland.

The contract has been ratified in the $2.9 billion budget and heads a range of green initiatives which will see the Brisbane City Council on track to achieving their goal to be able to provide all of it’s energy requirements from renewable energy generation.

It is encouraging for Brisbane residents to see a council using their money wisely; Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said “Importantly, we are set to commit to a long-term contract to provide a guarantee of renewable electricity supply at stable prices as a buffer against future price increases.”

With electricity prices rising continuing to escalate this is of considerable importance, the council now spends $5 million each year buying electricity from green energy sources. Their electricity purchase in 2010 was almost 100 gigawatt hours, which is enough to power everything from street lights to council buildings.

The council doesn’t just want to be able to pay less for their electricity, they also want Brisbane residents to use less in the 1st place; $433,000 will be spent to educate people in how to live more sustainably, and $100,000 go towards targeting tenants in large office buildings to save power.
