Change to the Solar Bonus Scheme in Queensland

The Queensland Government’s Solar Bonus Scheme is one of the most generous in Australia and has helped to make switch to solar energy much more affordable for many families since it was introduced in 2008. Since the Scheme was introduced, Solar usage in Queensland has boomed, with a massive increase in less than 3 years; from 3.2 megawatts of installed solar PV capacity to over 149 megawatts capacity.
This rapid increase was probably rather more than expected and so to ensure that Scheme remains cost-effective the Queensland Government is changing the eligibility requirements for the Solar Bonus Scheme from 7 June 2011.
What are the changes?

  • The size of eligible solar PV systems will be limited to 5 kilowatt capacity.
  • A limit of one Scheme application per premises will be introduced.

It is important to note that:

Current Scheme participants will not be affected by the amendments.
There will be no change to the feed-in tariff rate of 44 cents per kilowatt hour.
The end date of the Scheme will remain unchanged at 1 July 2028.
