Early Phasing Out of Solar Subsidies
Well there were some big government announcements in the paper today that is both good and bad news for those wanting to see increased renewable energy use in Australia…..The bad news is that the federal government will accelerate cuts to subsidies for home solar panels from July, phasing them out a year earlier than scheduled, while the good news is that the greens are going to push for investment certainty for large scale renewable energy projects at the Clean Energy Week Conference in Melbourne.
According to an article published in the Sydney Morning Herald today The Gillard government believes subsidy schemes are both inefficient ways to reduce emissions and also inequitable because they are paid for by increased power costs…….The changes mean federal subsidies for rooftop solar panels will end in mid-2013, a year earlier than promised, and with the carbon tax looming as a more fair and efficient alternative this may well be reduced further. The other likely option is that the subsidies will start on a 2KWh plus system only rather than the 1.5KWh size currently.
”The Greens are now stepping up the pressure for these policies in our discussions with the government and with the independent MPs,” Senator Milne will say at her conference presentation.
As always when it comes to Solar rebates and schemes, Government policies are open to change, so our advice for consumers is to not sit on the fence any more if you are still unsure about making the switch to clean renewable solar power….. we are already at the peak of rebates and incentives on offer and it will only reduce from here on!
