Latest Developments in Solar Panel Technology
The most commonly used solar panels today are the mono-crystalline type, which offers the highest power to size ratio with slower degeneration. Compared to others the mono-crystalline can produce double the total output for longer duration. They are slightly more costly than the others but the extra power produced makes it well worth it!
While they are much more efficient than any existing solar panel technology, about 18% at best, there is new age of solar cells under development which will likely revolutionise solar power.
For instance there are new thin film solar cells or thin film PV cells being produced by depositing one or several thin layers of photovoltaic cells on a substrate. The thickness of the film is measured by nanometers and micrometers, and is somewhat similar to Australian bank notes.
Although the technology is still under development and the efficiency is not as reliable as the mono-crystalline panels as yet, the technology opens doors to new possibilities of much more malleable solar cells that can follow the contour of roofs to maximise daily sunlight absorption.
Another recent technological marvel was developed in the form of the CSP or concentrated solar power. The system works by directing large area of sunlight to a small area amplifying the heat. The collectors usually are highly reflective mirrors and the point where they are angled is the boiler. The steam from the boiler drives an electricity turbine producing large amounts of energy. Though this solar thermal technology is only applicable for massive projects, it has proven its potential, and will now be used in a natural gas/solar hybrid in one of the solar flagship programs which has been approved in North Queensland.
Possibly the most industry changing development to date is still a long way off before application according to it’s Australian researchers, but it will potentially eliminate the need for large spaces for solar panels. If successful the “print on” solar cell technology will be able to be painted or printed onto walls, totally transforming solar systems as we know them…….The researchers also said that the technology will be cheaper than any other renewable energy systems that exist today and be can applicable to virtually anything.
Australian researches are leading the way in solar technology worldwide thanks to the facilities and support provided by organisations such as the CSIRO and the Solar Institute, which also invite the contribution of international scientists.
The next few years promise to be a very exciting time for the solar industry, and with the carbon tax set to provide a whole new source of revenue for research, development and investment into renewable technologies, it’s probably safe to say that the next 5 years or so could see greater improvements in alternative energy then we have seen in the last 100 years!
And just as well, because we urgently need to develop economically viable solar power technology on a large scale that will reduce the skyrocketing costs to families and businesses of electricity, while still ensuring that we can at least come close to meeting our carbon emission targets for 2020.
